Model Examples

To provide you with a better understanding of our various model outputs, we have made available these 3 downloadable models. The first is a typical reverse engineering project, an aircraft hinge. There are many formats available to view, each representing a distinct level of quality and complexity.

The second is another reverse engineering project, a motorcycle gearbox. There are also many formats available to view, each showing a different process used, and showing quality and complexity levels.

The third model you will find is a typical digital modeling project, a head sculpture. This sculpture represents a more organic form, and has various formats to also show quality and complexity:

Aircraft Hinge - Reverse Engineering Example (Geometric)

Aircraft Hinge - Point Cloud

Point Cloud - ASC File (5 MB)

Dense collection of (x,y,z) points obtained from laser scanning. Generally considered raw data, although it can be cleaned and used for CAD operations.

Uses:

  • Inspection or analysis
  • Import into some CAD or modeling software

Aircraft Hinge - Polygonal Model

Polygonal Model - STL File (17 MB)

A faceted (or tessellated) model consisting of many triangles. Facets are formed by using the point cloud.

Uses:

  • Rapid prototyping, design, milling, and analysis software

Aircraft Hinge - Rapid NURBS Model

Rapid NURBS Model - IGS File (2 MB)

NURBS surfaces wrapped over a polygonal model; smoother than a polygonal model and captures part geometry accurately. Model can be brought into parametric modelers such as SolidWorks.

Uses:

  • Import into CAD software as a surface or solid model(with no parametric history)
  • Import into most machining and analysis software

Aircraft Hinge - Hybrid Model

Hybrid Model - STEP File (2 MB)

Rapid NURBS model of part as above with specific geometric features added. While the NURBS are not parametric, geometric features are editable.

Uses:

  • Import into CAD software as a solid model (only added geometric features are parametric)

Aircraft Hinge - Engineered Solid Model

Engineered Solid Model - STEP File (800 KB)

A model created in a solid form to accurately represent your as-built part as it was designed resulting in smooth surfaces and precise geometry. Built from feature-based geometric values.

Uses:

  • Import into parametric CAD software as a solid model with geometric history

Machined Cover - Reverse Engineering Example (Geometric)

Machined Cover - Point Cloud

Point Cloud - ASC File (5 MB)

Dense collection of (x,y,z) points obtained from laser scanning. Generally considered raw data, although it can be cleaned and used for CAD operations.

Uses:

  • Inspection or analysis
  • Import into some CAD or modeling software

Machined Cover - Polygonal Model

Polygonal Model - STL File (9 MB)

A faceted (or tessellated) model consisting of many triangles. Facets are formed by using the point cloud.

Uses:

  • Rapid prototyping, design, milling, and analysis software

Machined Cover - Rapid NURBS Model

Rapid NURBS Model - IGS File (6 MB)

NURBS surfaces wrapped over a polygonal model; smoother than a polygonal model and captures part geometry accurately. Model can be brought into parametric modelers such as SolidWorks.

Uses:

  • Import into CAD software as a surface or solid model(with no parametric history)
  • Import into most machining and analysis software

Machined Cover - Hybrid Model

Hybrid Model - STEP File (11 MB)

Rapid NURBS model of part as above with specific geometric features added. While the NURBS are not parametric, geometric features are editable.

Uses:

  • Import into CAD software as a solid model (only added geometric features are parametric)

Machined Cover - Engineered Solid Model

Engineered Solid Model - STEP File (500 KB)

A model created in a solid form to accurately represent your as-built part as it was designed resulting in smooth surfaces and precise geometry. Built from feature-based geometric values.

Uses:

  • Import into parametric CAD software as a solid model with geometric history

Machined Cover - Engineered Surface Model

Engineered Surface Model - STEP File (500 KB)

A mathematically generated NURBS model created to accurately represent your as-built part as it was designed resulting in smooth surfaces and precise geometry. Built from feature-based geometric values.

Uses:

  • Import into parametric CAD software as a solid model with geometric history

Head Sculpture - Digital Modeling Example (Organic)

Head Sculpture - Point Cloud

Point Cloud - ASC File (1 MB)

Uses:

  • Inspection or analysis
  • Import into some CAD or modeling software

Head Sculpture - Polygonal Model

Polygonal Model - STL File (13 MB)

A faceted (or tessellated) model consisting of many triangles. Facets are formed by using the point cloud.

Uses:

  • Rapid prototyping, design, milling, and analysis software

Head Sculpture - Rapid NURBS Model

Rapid NURBS Model - IGS File (1 MB)

NURBS surfaces wrapped over a polygonal model; smoother than a polygonal model and captures part geometry accurately. Model can be brought into parametric modelers such as SolidWorks.

Uses:

  • Import into CAD software as a surface or solid model(with no parametric history)
  • Import into most machining and analysis software
